Chiropractic Health -- Thyroid Disorders

Thyroid Disorders

Symptoms of hypothyroidism (under active thyroid) include: fatigue, weakness, cold hands and feet, low body temperature, dry sparse hair, dry skin, weight gain despite loss of appetite, poor memory, low sex drive, slow pulse, low blood pressure, and menstrual irregularities, to name a few. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) include: weight loss, increased appetite, restlessness, nervousness, irritability, over activity, increased heart rate, heart palpitations, increased sweating, tremors, shakiness, double vision, and protrusion of eyes.

How Upper Cervical Care Relates to Thyroid Disorders

Evidence supports that certain cases of thyroid disorders result from the malfunction of nerves in the brain and spinal cord that control the thyroid's production of thyroid hormone. Whether too little or too much thyroid hormone is produced, the abnormal level can be due to a malfunction between the brain, pituitary, spinal cord, and thyroid, and can be head/neck trauma-induced.

The purpose of upper cervical care is to reverse the trauma-induced neck injury; thereby reducing irritation to the injured nerves that supply the thyroid. While many thyroid disease sufferers recall specific traumas such as head injuries, auto accidents or falls that preceded the onset of their symptoms, some do not. An upper cervical examination utilizing Digital Infrared Imaging is necessary in each individual's case to assess whether an upper cervical injury is present and whether benefit from upper cervical care can be achieved.
